HPC Cluster Introduction Course

Second course in our HPC course ladder provided by the Paderborn Center for Parallel Computing (PC2).

This course teaches the most important concepts and methods for working with a multi-user HPC cluster. The basics include the structure of the HPC cluster, how to securely connect to the cluster and the different data storage systems. Then, the course explains how to interact with the workload manager to submit jobs to the cluster.

• Computational resources (CPUs, GPUs, FPGAs) available at Paderborn Center for Parallel Computing (PC2)
• How to apply for computational resources
• Access the computer cluster systems at PC2
• Filesystems on the HPC cluster
• SSH with public key authentication
• Job submission and definition of job scripts using SLURM
• Basic usage of environment modules to access installed HPC software
• Control of parallel computations using OpenMP and MPI

This course includes hands-on exercises on the HPC cluster system at PC2.

Please note:

1. This course assumes basic knowledge of the Linux shell. We provide a short online selftest. In case you have no experience with Linux, we recommend that you attend our next Linux Introduction Course.
2. The language of the course is planned to be English. If you don't feel comfortable enough with English, we can make this course also in German at a later date upon request.
3. If you would like to join the course in-person, please bring your own laptops. No special operating system is required. You can participate with Windows, macOS or some Linux-distribution. Please make sure that the wireless connection of your laptop works (for example with eduroam). In case you don't have access to eduroam, we can provide wireless network connection during the course.
4. If you would like to join the course online (via the Zoom Meeting at Paderborn University), the link and more detailed information to join the course will be available, once your registration is complete.

This course is free of cost for members of German universities or publicly-funded research institutions in Germany.

Note: the number of on-site seats is limited and the allocation of seats is done by the organizers.
