Do Research Like a Munchkin: Software Development Practices Applied to Computational Research

The aim of this course is to enrich the researchers with the most recent and effective techniques used in Software Development. This four-day course is organized as an online workshop with presentations, exercises and a small programming project. During the course the participants can work in small groups accompanied by the instructors and receive regular advice quickly.

Two main topics in software development are covered in this course:

  • Agile Project Management
    • keep the project under control with useful and lightweight techniques
    • enhance the developers ability to respond swiftly to changes of product requirements
    • boost motivation and productivity of a team
  • Clean Code
    • present best practices to write maintainable code and reduce debugging time
    • introduce the Test Driven Development method to improve the reliability in software development
    • use Git to control code evolution and enable effective collaboration

Above all the instructors also offer consultation to the participants for one year after the course, while applying the learnt disciplines to their own projects in practice.
